Review: Venom
Venom is Sonys’ first Spiderman spinoff which looks like their attempt to lauch a Spiderman-less Spiderman Universe.
Plot:
When the investigative journalist Eddy Brock(Tom Hardy) comes into contact with an alien symbiote Venom brought to earth by Elon Musk lookalike Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) they have to learn to work together in order to not only save themselves but also the whole world.
So short, so boring.
While the movie has some upsides, in my opinion, Venom fails on almost all levels. The Story is overall boring and predictable even when making jumps in character movitations and with all the lucky coincidences that happen. The overall story developement is so wierdly paced that it felt to me like an entire act was missing in the middle. The dialog is cringeworthy in parts and many times I felt brought back to a 90s comic book movie. Even the music is unmemorable at best and downright obnoxious in some parts (the car chase for example).
The acting is a mixed bag. Riz Ahmed as a evil genius villian doesn’t work for me at all.
Tom Hardy on the other hand I really like (as I usually do). He seems to really enjoy the character and has a lot of fun with playing Eddy. The Eddy-Venom relation with the buddy-cop-like dialogues are the best part of the movie, even though not all the joke in it land for me. The camera work is solid and some good lighing, the movie creates some nice athmospheric shots.
The fact that the movie made ~80mil opening weekend means we are going to get the sequel that is teased in the mid-credit scene, that noone suprised. And with the succes of the movie we will probably get the Kraven the Hunter and Morbius movies Sony talked about… all in PG-13 …Great
My rating: 4/10
PS: The post credit scene is from Into the Spider-Verse and it’s the best thing about the movie. That should tell you everyhing.
